MV Balmoral
MV Balmoral
MV Balmoral and the 4 Stothert and Pitt electric dock cranes alongside M-Shed on Princes Wharf in Bristol.
The MV Balmoral was built by the John I Thornycroft & Company in 1949 for use by the Red Funnel Line in 1968, as part of their Southhampton, Isle of Wight and South of England Royal mail routes. When Red Funnel Line went out of business, she was sold to the P&A Campbell's White Funnel Line operating up and down the Bristol Channel, when White Funnel Line also went out of business in 1980, she was sold to a private owner who used her as a floating resturant in Dundee till she was sold to the Waverley Steam Navigation Co. Ltd in 1986 and returned to Bristol. In 2013 she stopped sailing due to increased costs of running her, but in 2015 she was sold to a newly set up charity the MV Balmoral Fund Ltd with the intention of returning her to sailing after a refit, which she did from 2015-2017 before needing more restoration work in 2018 and returning to sailing in 2019 when the weather permits safe sailing.
42 Stothert & Pitt Electric Dock Cranes were orginally installed along the bristol harbourside & docks, with these 4 being the only ones left as part of the museum. Crane 32 has a max lift weight of 10 tons while the remaining 3 have a max lifting weight of 3 tons.
